Technical Specifications

Hosting for sites using the WUSM Web Theme is provided by Washington University Information Technology. The production environment is composed of 10 servers spread out across the West and North campuses to ensure availability and redundancy, and it includes Varnish Cache, MariaDB,  GlusterFS, Puppet, and F5 load balancing. All sites are served securely over HTTPS and use WUSTL Key authentication for editors/administrators. There is also a test environment where content can be loaded while a site is in development.

There is no charge to use this robust, scalable, reliable hosting.

Consistent text stylings are built into the theme. By using the WUSM Web Theme, campus partners agree to use these native styles throughout sites.

The WUSM Web Theme is designed to work well in Internet Explorer 11+ and the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari on devices ranging from smartphones to desktop computers.

By default, the theme is installed with WordPress plugins including Advanced Custom Fields Pro (required), Google Analytics by Yoast, MCE Table Buttons, Simple Page Ordering, and WUSM Accordion.

WashU Medicine Marketing & Communications continuously makes improvements to the theme, and Washington University IT takes care of all system administration tasks. WordPress, the WUSM Web Theme, and all installed plugins are updated on the test server on the second Thursday of every month. The production server is updated on the fourth Thursday of every month.

Requests for Washington University IT to host WordPress sites for School of Medicine groups must come through WashU Medicine Marketing & Communications. School of Medicine WordPress sites must use the WUSM theme or be built by a preferred vendor using plugins approved by WashU Medicine Marketing & Communications, University Marketing & Communications and WashU IT.
